Shri PM Prasad, CMD Coal India Addressed Workshop on ‘Just Transformation in Indian Cola Regions: Framing the Pathways’

Kolkata, 27 August 2025: A workshop on “Just Transformation in the Indian Coal Regions: Framing the Pathways” was organised at our corporate headquarters in Kolkata. Speaking on the occasion, our Chairman Shri P.M. Prasad highlighted Coal India’s pivotal role in ensuring the Nation’s energy security.

He emphasized that while fulfilling this responsibility, Coal India remains equally committed to safeguarding the environment and supporting communities through sustainable practices. He further underlined the importance of preparing and skilling people in coal-bearing areas for future employment opportunities.

Shri PM Prasad also outlined various CSR initiatives undertaken by Coal India, including healthcare, education, water supply, sanitation, and skill development, aimed at improving the quality of life in coalfield regions.

Our Director (Technical), Shri Achyut Ghatak, in his address, emphasized Coal India’s environmental stewardship, citing the successful reclamation of 38,000 hectares of mined land into forests, parks, and areas for community use.

He stressed the need to skill the youth in coal-bearing regions for green jobs in sectors such as solar energy, electric vehicles, and the circular economy. Concluding his remarks, he observed that the energy transition must be gradual, inclusive, and locally responsive, with coal continuing to play a crucial role during this shift. Professor Pradip Swarnakar, of IIT Kanpur made a presentation on Just Transformation. Officials from our subsidiaries attended the workshop.
