NETRA, Coal Mining Group & IIT Bombay Conduct Pakri Barwadih CO2 Well Survey

New Delhi, 08 May 2025: A joint team of NETRA, IIT Bombay & Mining Group conducted survey of Pakri Barwadih mines on 6th May, for drilling 1200-meter-deep CO2 injection well. Two of such locations were identified. After drilling CO2 injection well, core samples shall be extracted for carrying out passive seismic monitoring and simulation studies. After experimental and simulation studies, identified CO2 injection well will be re-purposed for actual injection of CO2.

Earlier, study for assessment of CO2 storage potential has already been carried out for six of Cat-1 coal fields (three of NTPC) wherein it is observed that CO2 storage potential of Pakri Barwadih coal mine is the highest at 4.3-15.5 Million Tons.

The project is a part of NTPC’s commitment to play a key role in India’s energy transition journey as the country aspires to achieve the ‘Net-Zero’ target and other climate goals.
